Automotive mould classification and manufacturing process

Broadly speaking, “automotive mould” is a general term for all the moulds used to manufacture parts for automobiles. For example, injection moulds, stamping moulds, forging moulds, casting wax moulds, glass moulds and so on. When people say car, the first thing that appears in front of the eyes is the car body. That is to say, the body is the identification of the car assembly. The body represents the image characteristics of the car. Automotive mould from a narrow sense is to punch the car body of all the stamping parts of the mould of the general term. It is also called “auto body stamping mould”. For example, the roof flap die, the cross member reinforcement plate compression die, etc.

I. Automotive plastic mould classification

There are many ways to classify automotive plastic moulds, which can be divided into the following categories according to the different methods of plastic parts moulding and processing:

-Injection mould

Injection mould is also known as plastic injection mould. The moulding process of this type of mould is characterized by placing the plastic raw material in the heated barrel of the injection machine. The plastic is heated and melted, pushed by the screw or plunger of the injection machine, and enters the mould cavity through the nozzle and the pouring system of the mould, where the plastic is held, pressurised and cooled to solidify. Due to the heating and pressure device can play a role in stages, injection moulding can not only form the complex shape of the plastic parts, and high production efficiency, good quality. Therefore, injection moulding occupies a large proportion in plastic parts moulding, and the injection mould accounts for more than half of the plastic moulding mould. Injection machine is mainly used for thermoplastic plastic moulding, and in recent years, it is also gradually used for thermosetting plastic moulding.

-Compression mould

Compression mould is also known as compression mould or compression mould. The moulding process of this kind of mould is that the plastic raw material is added directly into the open mould cavity, and then the mould is closed, and the plastic is molten under the action of heat and pressure, and then fills up the cavity with a certain pressure. At this time, the molecular structure of the plastic has a chemical cross-linking reaction, and gradually hardened and shaped. Compression moulds are mostly used for thermosetting plastics, and their moulded parts are mostly used for the shells of electrical switches and daily necessities.

-Transfer die

Transfer mould is also known as pressure injection mould or extrusion mould. The moulding process of this kind of mould is characterized by adding plastic raw materials into the preheated charging chamber, and then the pressure is exerted by the pressure column to the plastic raw materials in the charging chamber, the plastic melts at high temperature and high pressure and enters into the cavity through the pouring system of the mould, and then chemical cross-linking reflection occurs and curing moulding occurs gradually. The transfer moulding process is mostly used for thermosetting plastics, and can mould plastic parts with complex shapes.

-Extrusion Die

Extrusion die is also known as extrusion head. This type of die can continuously produce plastics with the same cross-section shape, such as plastic pipes, rods and sheets. The extruder is heated and pressurised in the same way as an injection machine. The molten state of the plastic passes through the head to form a continuous stream of moulded plastic parts, and the production efficiency is particularly high.

In addition to the types of plastic moulds listed above, there are also vacuum forming moulds, compressed air moulds, blow moulds, low-foam plastic moulds and so on.

Stamped parts on the body of an automobile are roughly divided into cover parts, beam parts and general stamped parts. The stamping parts that can obviously express the image characteristics of the car are the car cover parts. Therefore, a more specific automotive mould can be described as “automotive cover part stamping die”. It is simply referred to as an automotive cover stamping die. For example, a front door outer panel trimming die, a front door inner panel punching die, and so on.
